Colonoscopy (Lower GI Endoscopy)

www.nucleusinc.com This 3D medical animation shows the placement of an endoscope in the large colon (bowel) during a colonoscopy procedure to screen for polyps and colorectal cancer. During a colonoscopy or a sigmoidoscopy, a biopsy is sometimes preformed to distinguish between benign and cancerous tissue. If polyps are found during the colonoscopy a polypectomy is generally performed. See more 3D medical animations from Nucleus Medical Art at www.nucleusinc.com ANCE00175

@krazybob123 I didn’t even bother with sedation. I was going to cause i thought it might be a bit painful but it felt ok (in a wierd kinda way it has to be said)……………Cue Flatulence.

Just got my first sigmoidoscopy today as part of a routine screening. The preparation went well, and no anesthetics or sedatives were administered. Unfortunately, I had some pretty bad cramping during the insertion! Ouch! Luckily my doctor was done in less than five minutes, and I was mostly fine after a few minutes rest. Just a bit sore.

Result: “squeaky clean.” (his words) :)

If he had actually found something inside, this procedure could have saved my life. Next one is in two years.

@jkeelsnc Noooo tomorrow im getting a sigmoidoscopy…i was hoping they would put me to sleep :(

What about privacy in a sigmoidoscopy? Can i cover my penis? lol

  10. Blueball0120 February 8, 2012 at 12:44 am #

@Leojk87 Yes. You just take off your underwear but there is just a little hole in the back your butt is. Everything else of covered. Plus doctors know what man and woman genitals look like.

i had mine done 5th November last year.I had midazolam which made me pretty relaxed and a bit forgetful but i watched part of my procedure and did feel some pretty bad pain at times,it helps to breathe through it.the worst bit is the bowel prep cos when it kicks in,it really does!my diagnosis was what i guessed, ibs.
this procedure wasn’t as bad as i imagined, and 20 mins examination could be a life saver.if i can survive colonoscopy anyone can!

@shaffer8794 does this hurt???(the kolonoscopy not the surgery u had)

I was past the age where I was supposed to start getting colonoscopies even though I’m high risk for colon cancer. The reason: I think that the sedation is dangerous and may cause permanant memory loss, especially if you get midazolam (Versed); google “versed horror stories” and read the thousands of awful experiences. The GI doc who did mine agreed that Versed was a bad drug and that she would not use it. She offered propofol or painkiller only (fentanyl). It was easy without drugs.

That’s weird that most of you are saying they didn’t put you out for this — and that some of you didn’t even use a sedative at all! I was worried going in today to get an endoscopy and sigmoidoscopy because of some of the comments on this page, however, they kept telling me not to worry that they’re giving me “the good stuff” and it’ll put me out. They ended up giving me propofol, the doctor told me to take a few deep breaths, and by the 3rd breath I was completely out.

I had this procedure many yrs ago…my “specialist” was a quack. I recieved NO sedation or pain relief…i had no idea. this was at the henderson hospital in hamilton ontario. I wish i could remember the drs name b/c i am now scarred for life. I will NEVER have this done again.

I have just been for this procedure and the worst thing about it was drinking the mixture the night before and the morning after i would have prefferred the enema was just a bit uncomfortable like wind pains deep breaths through the pains and its gone but other than that nothing to be afraid of honestly if you do take the drink be careful you might still have the runs for a day or two better the test than the other option

does this procedure hurt or feel uncomfortable in any way?? i might undergo sigmoidoscopy in a couple of days, but hopefully not. i have blood in my feces and having a hard time defecating. i underwent a rectal exam yesterday, there was a part that hurt but the doctor but found no blood. he said it will depend on my CBC and Fecalysis results if we’re pushing through sigmoidoscopy.

i just feel nervous about this procedure. =’(

  22. 1redclover February 7, 2012 at 7:21 pm #

and by the way, my doctor told me it can be done without sedative. but i’m so stressed right now how it would feel without getting one… and i worry a lot about getting sedated about memory loss or not being able to wake up anymore. =(

The prep. is far worse than the procedure itself, but don’t put it off. I had a polyps the size of a golf ball snipped. Yeah it can be a bit uncomfortable, but not as uncomfortable as something developing into cancer ;) If you need one – just do it!

I had my first one two weeks ago. (I am 17) Found out that I have Crohns disease. The worst part is the prep by far, all you remember is a little bit before you go to sleep and then you wake up.
